St. Lawrence Fishing Communities - Potsdam, NY

Potsdam is the home to Clarkson University and SUNY Potsdam. It is a vibrant town and village offering restaurants with a wide variety of food choices from American to Italian, Indian to Moroccan. The village has an unrivaled arts culture including two downtown galleries and the famed Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. Most any weekend you can take your pick of bands playing in various locations, and in the summer, concerts in the park provide varieties from country to rock, jazz and fusion.

With its central location, Potsdam is a great place to stay and explore the rest of the county from the banks of the St. Lawrence in Waddington, only a short 25 minute drive, to the Adirondack Mountains about 40 minutes away.

Angler’s have their pick of places from the Raquette River that runs through the middle of the village, to outlying sections of the Raquette. Only about a 15 minute drive and anglers can be at the east or west branches of St. Regis River or the Grasse River.

Canoe access to the river above the dam in Potsdam is available in the village near Clarkson Inn. Below the Potsdam dam access is easily found at bridges, roadsides, and a site provided by Orion Power near their hydroelectric dam on the River Road. Handicapped access and a boat launch are found at Norwood Pond about five miles north.
