St. Lawrence Fishing Communities - Ogdensburg, NY

Ogdensburg is the only city within St. Lawrence County. Located directly on the St. Lawrence River, Ogdensburg has a deep water port for international trade opportunities.

Special features of Ogdensburg include the Frederic Remington Art Museum, 303 Washington Street, which is within walking distance of the City Docks. Remington was a well know artist, illustrator and sculpture of the early 1900s. One of his famous bronze sculptures, the Bucking Bronco, graces the Oval Office of the White House and has for more than three decades.

The FRAM houses one of the largest collections of his bronzes, as well as oil paintings, illustrations and many of his personal artifacts. His wife, nicknamed “kid,” lived in the mansion which houses the museum following his death in 1949, although he never lived there. The house adjacent to the museum is the Eva Caten “Kid” center and is dedicated to hand-on activities in various art media for children. The Remington Art Museum is open year round.

The Oswegatchie River empties into the St. Lawrence River at Ogdensburg and offers good smallmouth opportunities. St. Lawrence River boat launches are available on the city's waterfront and at the Lisbon Public Beach, which is about 12 miles east on State Route 37.

The shoals at the Ogdensburg International Bridge are a favorite walleye and muskie spot. Smallmouth bass can be found around Galop Island during the summer. In winter the frozen river at Ogdensburg sprouts suburbs of ice shanties, the occupants jigging for northern pike and yellow perch.

The Ogdensburg City Boat Launch is located off Riverside Drive. There are slips available for dockage, pump-out, and electric. The Dobisky Community Center is also available for boaters with a lounge, kitchen, water, restrooms and hot showers.
