St. Lawrence Fishing Communities - Madrid, NYWhile this small community seems quite unpretentious, it comes to life with two Gas and Steam Engine Exhibitions each year, sponsored by the St. Lawrence Power and Equipment Museum, which is located on the outskirts of town. This museum is being developed to show how agriculture has been affected by the development of the gas and steam engine, as well as other modernizations on the farm. The Madrid Bluegrass River Festival, and annual Bluegrass Music Festival draws people in from all over the country, with music, entertainment, food and family camping. Located between the communities of Potsdam and Waddington, the hamlet offers access to convenience store, bank, and a couple of small restaurants. Currently a bridge connecting Route 345 is under construction and a detour is posted. Foot traffic is allowed on the bridge, but no motorized vehicles. The boat launch is located on the southern end of the bridge at the Community Center, so those looking to launch for fishing, or attend the above mentioned events, need not use the detour. The warm water anglers fish this portion of the Grasse River for smallmouth bass and walleye. The River also has a stable muskie population, but regulations require a 40 inch minimum and catch and release is strongly encouraged. Because of shallow water, many anglers op to toss surface lures, but spinners and jerk baits will also entice strikes in the small rivers for muskie. Places to Stay
