St. Lawrence Fishing Communities - Hopkinton, NY

This wide-open farm county is characteristically picturesque and rural. The St. Regis River runs through the town, although not directly through the hamlet proper. The hamlet has a convenience store-gas station for provision, as well as a very large garden and produce stand. The western end of Lake Ozonia Road, with access to great fishing at Lake Ozonia is also located near the intersection of Routes 11B and 72.

The St. Regis River ranks among the county's most popular trout streams. Bridges on County Route 49 and the Days Mills Road provide access. Special regulations allow year round fishing on the stretch of the St. Regis between Fort Jackson and the Days Mills Road in Hopkinton. Trout are catchable from spring through early winter with May and June the prime months for rainbows and September the best time for browns.

Annual stockings consist of a combination of 10,000 rainbow trout and brown trout, and the St. Regis has been receiving 750 two year old browns each year since 1997.

At Lake Ozonia there is a NYS Department of Conservation (DEC) hand boat launch, with parking for 30 cars. The access is 8 miles south of Rt. 72 in Hopkinton.

Special regulations allow year round fishing at this popular lake which receives annual DEC stockings of rainbow trout and splake numbering 5,000. In recent years, Lake Ozonia has also been stocked with lake trout, landlocked salmon, and brown trout. The browns are two year old trout measuring 15 inches. The high numbers of trout here overshadow the outstanding yellow perch fishing that exists.
