St. Lawrence Fishing Communities - Fort Jackson, NYFort Jackson is a crossroads about 15 miles east of Potsdam. While there a not a lot of services near the hamlet itself, the Brasher Falls-Winthrop area has convenience stores, gas station and a few small restaurants, as well as a campground. The Village of Potsdam includes more lodging and dining options as well and entertainment opportunities, and an outdoor recreation outfitters. Located on the St. Regis River Fort Jackson east to the Franklin County Line offers a 25-mile stretch of good trout waters. West of Fort Jackson to the Mohawk Reservation, look for walleye and bronzebacks. In addition, northern pike, and muskies are possibilities as are pan fish. The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation has a free pamphlet “Fishing and Canoeing the St. Regis River in St. Lawrence County. For a copy contact the Region 6 office at 315-785-2261. The Emerald Isle restaurant in Brasher Falls offers a good place to kick-back and relax with some good food, there is a summer patio for outdoor dining overlooking rapids on the St. Regis.
