St. Lawrence County Fishing Communities - Waddington, NYThis St. Lawrence River community offers a powerful punch for its size. Although the Main Street is very short, you still can find a bakery, restaurant, creperie, art gallery, bait shop and historic structures. And the end of Main Street is a great view of the River. If you are craving a little indoor recreation during your stay, the Riverlanes Bowling Alley is just a couple blocks from Main Street. Waddington offers great access and fishing on the St. Lawrence River. As usual, the big river in this area is home to large populations of gamefish. Walleye and northern pike are the favorite gamefish of local anglers. Walleye in the 7 - 9 pound range are often caught and 10 - 13 pounders are not unusual. Bays with weed beds near deep water drop-offs are excellent pike producing areas. Smallmouth populations are widespread and muskie trolling is often rewarded. There are two dock areas in Waddington. One off St. Lawrence Avenue at the end of Main Street and a second dock and launch area at Whittaker Park, located right off State Highway 37. About 4 miles north of Waddington on State Route 37 is Coles Creek State Park and just north of the park entrance is the Coles Creek Marina, which offers docking, pump-out, electric, water, restrooms and showers. The Park and Marina are open mid-May through Columbus Day (the first weekend in October). Waddington is the headquarters for many fishing tournaments throughout the year. The St. Lawrence River Walleye Association hosts five tournaments each year, the Northern Pike Challenge in March, the Opening Day Derby in May, the Smack Down in June, the Walleye Challenge in August, and the Fall Classic in September. Two carp tournaments take place annually. The St. Lawrence Carp Challenge in July, which is an adult tournament sponsored by Specialist Tackle and Riverview Motel; and the St. Lawrence International Junior Carp Tournament held the third weekend in August, hosted by the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce. The Junior Tournament is open to youth ages 11-18 with a prize pool of $10,000. Joe Babbitt owner of St. Lawrence Experience is also available for various fishing charters and outings. St. Lawrence Experience is located on Route 37 between Waddington and Lisbon. Places to Stay
