Schedules for Colton, Massena, Canton, Ogdensburg Winter Festivals

COLTON TOWNSHIP WINTERFEST -- JANUARY 27 - 29

From bed races and cross-country contests to a quilt show and sled dog races, there’s something for everyone at the Colton Township Winterfest, Friday, January 27th through Sunday, January 29th.

The entire community has worked together to make the weekend a success; area students are providing assistance throughout the weekend’s activities. Residents are asked to turn on their holiday lights over the weekend, in celebration of Winterfest.

The Colton Winterfest Quilt Show is on Saturday the 27th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday the 29th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.. Quilts will be on display at the Colton Hepburn Library, Zion Episcopal Church, and the Colton Town Hall. At the library, featured quilts will celebrate the library's 100th anniversary. Zion Episcopal Church and the Town Hall will exhibit quilts made by local quilters. Catamount Lodge, located on SH 56 about 20 minutes south of Colton, will exhibit quilts of Mary Holmes Fisk.

Donations of non-perishable foods will be accepted at CPCS and Colton and South Colton Post Offices (during regular hours) to benefit local food banks.

9:00 A.M. Colton 10 Miler Foot Race - Starts at CPCS, Ends at Town Hall.  Popular hill course designed by Dan Dominie promises to keep racers warm. Awards to first five places. Organizer: Dan Dominie - 379-9290

10:00A.M.-DUSK Snowshoeing at Catamount Lodge, Lodge will be open for tours, refreshments available, snowshoes available for those not having their own.  Hiking if no snow. Catamount Lodge trails, Rte 56 South of South Colton. Sponsored by McWilliams’Family.

CANTON WINTERFEST -- 20TH ANNIVERSARY -- FEBRUARY 9 - 18

FEBRUARY 9TH – FEBRUARY 18TH

PUBLIC SKATING: Inside ice at the Pavilion during Winterfest is as follows: Feb. 11- 7 to 8:20pm, Feb. 12- 3 to 4:45pm, Feb. 18- 7 to 8:20pm. Cost is $1.00. Outside skating is free and schedule as follows: Open skating 10am to 12noon, Hockey 12 noon to 2pm, skating alternates every two hours until 10pm.

SNOWMAN/SNOWSCULPTURE “JUST FOR FUN” : Grasse River Heritage is sponsoring a Snowman/Snowsculpture recreational opportunity throughout Winterfest, just for fun! Individuals and Groups are welcome to participate anytime during Winterfest on the corner of West Main and Gouverneur St. (across from the Cascade) or in front of Heritage Park. MONEY FOR MITTENS: Money for warm outerwear for elementary age children collected throughout Winterfest by the Canton Area Zonta Club. Donations may be sent to: Zonta Club, PO Box 365, Canton, NY 13617 or contact any Canton Zonta member. Watch for “Money for Mittens” jars at Winterfest events.

CHAMBER “CELEBRATION” DINNER: Annual Chamber dinner held at Eben Holden on St. Lawrence University Campus. Displays and Cocktails 6:00pm, Dinner 7:00pm and Program starting at 7:30pm. Buffet includes London Broil w/ Sauteed Onions, Apricot Glazed Chicken, Stuffed Bell Peppers, Baked Red Herbed Potatos, Glazed Baby Carrots, Fresh Green Garden Salad, French Rolls, and Chocolate Mousse for dessert, tea and coffee. ZONTA WINE TASTING: The Canton Area Zonta Club will host its 5th Annual “Local Wine Tasting” at Dave’s Upstairs Banquet Room, 37 Main St., Canton from 4pm to 8pm. River Myst Winery will wet your palette with their unique wines of The North country. Have a seat, buy a bottle and relax to music by Ed McCarthy, or just stop in to taste or bring a bottle home. Live Auction at 7pm of baskets filled with goodies. The Zonta Store will be present to offer items for Valentine’s gifts. Bake sale to include cookies and chocolate covered strawberries. Tickets are $4.00 in advance or $5.00 at the door. Advance tickets from any Canton Zonta member or by calling Julie 386-8114 or Carol 386-4684. All proceeds fund local Zonta service projects and scholarships.

WINTER POOL TOURNAMENT:  Held at the Hoot Owl beginning at 4:30pm. All ages welcome. Prizes awarded. Register at the Hoot Owl, 40 Park St. any day after 8:30pm or Friday after 4:30pm.

TWILIGHT SLEDDING: Sponsored by SUNY Canton. Sledding for children and adults will be offered at 7:00pm at the SUNY Canton sled hill near parking lot #1. Hot chocolate and donuts will be served. (Rain or ice date Friday, February 17th)

Children will enjoy a movie in the Paige Room, complete with popcorn and bedtime snack. Bring your doll, sleeping bag and pillows to snuggle with! Tickets are $10 each and are on sale at the library. Only 30 tickets are available. There will be donated merchandise for sale at this event. 100% of all proceeds benefit the Canton Free Library.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST:  Sponsored by the Canton VFW Men’s Auxiliary. Held at the VFW Post 1231 on Gouverneur St. from 8am to 12 noon. Menu includes pancakes w/ real local maple syrup, eggs, sausage/ham, home fries, toast, juice and coffee. Price is $6.00 adults, 6-12 yrs. $4.00, 5yrs and under Free. All proceeds go to the Charities of Post 1231 VFW Men’s Auxiliary.

FROZEN FOOTE RACE: A four mile road race at St. Lawrence University held regardless of weather conditions. Race starts at 10:30am with registration beginning at 9:30am in the lobby of Appleton Arena, on Miner Street in Canton. Registration fee is $2 or free with a Winterfest button.


SCRAPBOOKING ADVENTURE: Knights of Columbus Hall, Miner St., 9:00am to 4:00pm. Cost of $15.00 includes lunch (must pre-register). Come and learn the art of scrapbooking and preserving memories in photo safe albums. This event is for both beginners and advanced scrapbookers. You will need to bring the photos and memorabilia you wish to include as well as any scrapbook materials you wish to use. Products will be available for purchase as well. A creative Memories consultant will be on hand to motivate attendees and provide great tips and ideas with some break out demonstrations. This Saturday Series is Washing Wool & Making Drop: This programis part of the SLCHA’s “Sheep to Shawl” series; kids will learn about washing wool, learn how to use a drop spindle & make their own to take home; this event is free.

TAUNY EXHIBIT: Carvin’ Critters and Knittin’ Mittens- exhibit open from 10:00am to 4:00pm., open all Winterfest week. This wintertime fun contest and exhibit will showcase two popular North Country winter pastimes and arts. Mittens contest will open during Canton’s Winterfest and all are invited to enter a pair of adult-sized mittens or a carving of a North Country animal in the contest. CHURCH CONCERTS: Kick off from 5:00pm to 6:00pm with a soup and bread dinner at St. Mary’s Church, sponsored by the Clergy. Free to public. Music during dinner. Bagpiper will start the concerts off at 6:30pm at the First Presbyterian Church, then the Grace Episcopal, the First Baptist, the Unitarian Universalist  and ending at the United Methodist Church for music and refreshments. BINGO:  The Knights of Columbus will award a special Winterfest “Warm Your Heart” basket during regular Bingo hours, 7:00pm at the K of C hall on Miner St.

The topic will be Hope Marston, Eye on the Iditarod: Author Hope Marston will talk about her new book “Eye on the Iditarod;” this true story is about a young girl who is training for Alaska’s grueling 1150 mile dog sled race from Anchorage, in south central Alaska, to Nome on the western Bering Sea coast; bring your lunch, beverage & dessert provided; this event is free.

GARDENSHARE FILM: Small Farm Rising is a one-hour film documenting a growing season at three unique Adirondack farms. This beautifully-shot film aims to inspire a new generation of farmers, and to help consumers understand the power of small-scale agriculture to build a more healthy and equitable food system. It is never too early to start thinking about the growing season!  Presented by Garden Share at 7:00pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church. Free to the public. A reception will follow the movie.

FFA SALE: The Canton FFA will be holding its 5th Annual Indoor Garage Sale, Craft Fair and Kids’ Corner. These events will take place at Canton Central School in the Banford Elementary Cafeteria, Gymnasium and hallways with doors opening at 9:00am and ending at 3:00pm. Admission fee of $1.00 will be charged to visit all areas of the event. Items for the garage sale will be accepted until Tuesday, Feb. 14th. The Craft show boasts over twenty vendors, and all sorts of items (except clothing) can be found in the Garage sale. All aspects of this event will go toward the costs associated with students attending the 87th Annual NYS FFA Convention in May. OGDENSBURG RIVER SHIVER  --  FEBRUARY 18 - 26

A Polar Bear Plunge, ice fishing derby and Battle of Ogdensburg reenactment highlight this year’s 'River Shiver' celebration in Ogdensburg.
 
The event runs February 18 through 26 and will include:
 
• February 18: Polar Bear 5K Walk/ Run, 9 a.m., sponsored by the area Lions Clubs, Visitor's Center, 100 Riverside Ave.
 
• February 18: Polar Bear Plunge and Costume Contest, Visitor's Center/Ogdensburg Marina, 100 Riverside Ave., 1 p.m. Plungers get pledges to jump into the St. Lawrence River to benefit the Chamber of Commerce and the Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad. Jumper bringing in the most money gets 10 percent of entire purse collected. Prizes for costumes, hot tub available, refreshments. Free towels to each jumper!
 
• February 18: Annual Ice Fishing Derby, Wheathouse Bay 6 a.m., sponsored by Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad. Fabulous prizes!
 
• February 18: Indoor homemade snow painting at Kids Place of Remington Art Museum. Paint pictures featuring snow scenes. Scavenger Hunt, ages 5 and up, in main Museum.
 
• February 19: Bridal Expo "Rediscovering your Backyard Bridal Expo," former BreckenRidge/Mitel building at the foot of the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge, sponsored by Assemblywoman Addie Russell, Ogdensburg Zonta, Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club, Ogdensburg Bridge & Port Authority and 96.7 YES-FM, PAC 98.7, Q Country 102.9.
 
• February 19: Making snowflakes at Kids Place of Remington Art Museum. Scavenger Hunt in main Museum for kids 5 and up
 
• February 25 & 26: Battle of Ogdensburg reenactment at Fort LaPresentation on Lighthouse Point, 1 p.m. Actual reenactment of the winter Battle of Ogdensburg featuring cannons, muskets, period costumes
 
• February 25: Outdoor Snow Painting at Kids Place of Remington Art Museum, using Kool -Aid, food coloring in spray bottles and stencils to create paintings on snow.
 
• February 26: 2nd Annual Zonta Snowflake Social at the Freight House Restaurant, 11a.m. to 3 p.m. Teddy Bear Tea, bring your teddy bear and enjoy tea. Dressing up is encouraged. Snowflake Social, 11a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring wine tasting, silent auction and 50/50 raffle, Express Spa services offered by BOCES and local artisans and craftsman vendors.
